“Gender-based violence and child-directed violence is intolerable and the stubborn persistence of the problem calls for an integrated, partnership-approach by all stakeholders.”
President Thabo Mbeki, 2004

During the 2004 Campaign of 16 Days of activism on no violence against women and children (16 days campaign), President Thabo Mbeki reiterated that the Campaign should be extended to include a programme of 365 days of action against gender-based. The vision for the 16 days campaign in 2006 is to translate the campaign into a sustainable 365 DAYS OF ACTION against gender – based violence.

What does the 365 days action mean? For victims of crime, this means government has to take action throughout the year to ensure that crime is a top priority. Several campaigns are often initiated during public holidays–
  • 8 March – Human Rights Day
  • 27 April – Freedom day
  • 1 May – workers day
  • 16 June – Youth day
  • 9 August - Women’ day
that highlight the theme of the day. Fro example, Human Rights is usually focused on educating the public about human rights and the constitution. The 365 campaign asks South African society to include the issue of gender-based violence throughout the year.

As we implement the Victims Charter, we hope to use the 365 DAYS to share information with the public about some of the milestones we have achieved.
