KITSKONSTABEL ACTIONS TO BE HEARD AT GRAHAMSTWON TRC HEARINGS

The activities of the South Africa Police's notorious apartheid-era "kitskonstables" will come under the spotlight at the three-day hearings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in Grahamstown next week, from April 7 to 9.

The kitskonstables (special constables) were infamous for random beatings and shootings in the Grahamstown area during the 1980s.

The commission will also hear evidence on violentflict between liberation organisations during the 1980s and the early 1990s.

Commission spokesman Phila Ngqumba on Thursday said the commission would hear evidence on conflict between the Azanian People's Organisation and the United Democratic Front in Port Alfred, as well as between the African National Congress and the Pan Africanist Congress.

The commission is scheduled to hear up to 60 cases involving human rights transgressions in Grahamstwon, Adelaide, Fort Beaufort, Port Alfred and Bedford.
